Liguria is a region on the north-west coast of Italy. While overlooking the sea on one side ,the other is surrounded by mountains and plush vegetation. Its ancient origins are home to palaeolithic remains such as the Toirano Grotto located on the western coast. This region has been home to many poets including Byron and Shelley. In fact Shelly died in the Gulf of La Spezia which is why it is often referred to as The Poet's Gulf. Portovenere is a charming village with rows of coloured houses overlooking the sea and flanked by the 16th century Castle and the Church of Saint Peter. La Spezia is nearby with its opulent gardens along the sea front promenade. Portofino and Portus Delfini are still sought after destinations for the international jet set. Amongst some of the most beautiful beach resorts it is worth mentioning Rapallo, Santa Margherita, Camogli and Alassio.
